ABOUT

New Media + Community Practice

Utilizing tools of new media this course will engage the emerging process of art-making known as community practice. New Media + Community Practice students will develop an awareness of how community engagement situates the local within the global to inform a robust artistic practice. Student will build projects through 'fieldwork' fostering collaboration with the physical, social and cultural composition of community building new analytical and abstract understandings of place.

Digital tool such as: sound, photo, video, projection, and/or web will be utilized to express projects. Little to no digital experience is adequate for this course.

Over the course of the semester students will study interdisciplinary art models of: social sculpture, art and ecology, interactive performance,  participatory practice, and place-making. Students will engage the concept of community practice through discussions, readings and several community based field-trips.

Class fieldwork and projects will feed an online wiki which will feature our community and environmental investigations building new methods for storytelling.
